  • Here at WindHaven Pediatric Dentistry, we support breast-feeding moms by offering Lip and Tongue-Tie Consultations.
  • At these consultations, we review a detailed checklist of symptoms that you and your baby may be experiencing, we examine your baby’s mouth, and offer recommendations to help make your nursing journey easier and more natural.
  • The recommendations may include referral to one of our pediatric collaborators (lactation consultant, chiropractor, cranio-sacral therapist, feeding therapist, ENT, or physical therapist) and/or a Frenectomy procedure in our office (lip/tongue tie release procedure).

How do a Lip and Tongue Tie affect nursing?

  • Nursing is a complicated and multifactorial process. One of the main components that contributes to successful milk transfer from mom to baby during nursing, is the mobility of the tongue and its ability to lift up to the roof of your baby’s mouth
  • If the frenulum (tongue-tie) under the tongue is short and/or thick, this acts as a physical restriction that prevents the tongue from functioning properly during nursing.

What are some signs/symptoms of a Lip or Tongue-Tie for my baby?

  • No/slow weight gain for baby
  • Shallow latch
  • Clicking sound when nursing
  • Unusual amounts of spit up/reflux
  • Upper lip blister
  • Coughing/Gagging during nursing
  • Nipple pain for mom during nursing
  • Decreased breast milk production for mom
  • Unusually long feeding sessions

If a Frenectomy is recommended, how is the procedure done on my baby?

We use state-of-the-art technology here at WindHaven Pediatric Dentistry including the Lightscalpel CO2 laser. This CO2 laser is the best tool for frenectomies because of the following benefits:

  • Reduced operative time
  • Minimal post-operative discomfort
  • Minimal bleeding
  • Increased accuracy and precision

Our parents love the fact that immediately after the frenectomy procedure, babies are able to nurse/feed right away!

We also offer Ozone Oil that is safe and effective in helping the wound sites heal faster.
